Re: Your opinion regarding Online Piano Lessons

That's true. Maybe in his spare time he could come with us and we could discuss piano. Maybe play some songs we know and show our skills so the others could give us some advice on how to play better.

Re: Your opinion regarding Online Piano Lessons

In my opinion, it won't work quite well. First, the setup, it's kinda hard for you, but even if you can do it easily, I don't think the students can. One more to add to that is the cost to buy and the setup. Second, accidents do happen, so a lot of things might happen when you do things yourself, especially when you are not a professional (I'm talkin about the students, because you are of course a pro Kyle wink)
There are a lot of stuff that can go wrong, that's my opinion at least.

Re: Your opinion regarding Online Piano Lessons

There is definitely potential in the idea, as I learned my first kyle landry (passion) simply by watching how your fingers moved a million and one times. It would also have the benefit of you inputting your fantastical knowledge as they go, for example on common chords etc.

However, students might find themselves in the same position I am currently in - unable to read sheet music and hence only knowing 3 or 4 songs they have managed to learn via the copy cat method.

You also face the problem of only having one Kyle landry! XD   I think you would have too much demand and it would limit the time you can spend having conferences with more....significant (?) indiviuals like Mr. Chiu.

Or in other words, i'd rather learn to read sheets and still have you making lovely videos, than learn a single song and use up some of your time.

smile  hope that helps in some vague way.

"-If you are going to teach Music Theory, this would be a great way for students to learn that."
exactly. I think there is far more to be gained teaching the theory to a group via a video or forum than teaching individuals a single song.
You clearly have an excellent grip on it all, but having never had lessons I struggle somewhat. I'm sure we'd all benefit from the key skills or ideas of piano playing. tongue

Re: Your opinion regarding Online Piano Lessons

You should try what Andrew Furmanczyk does (Which is give online lessons) He made a YouTube channel full of lessons, and they have worked well with many beginners to intermediates. You could try asking him questions about online teaching! His account name is Lypur.By the way. You should also become very specific and flexible when you try this route. Also, be very interactive and use many analogies.

Re: Your opinion regarding Online Piano Lessons

Just gonna point out something.

Some of you may remember, 26th of March last month Kyle posted like, 3 improvs on the same night, just taking requests from people. Looking at it, it was a huge success. Everyone was eager for more and pleased that Kyle was really active on YouTube. Now I know he doesn't have time to do that all the time, but how about this?

I'm sure everyone at school are doing there exams right now, but soon we'll be having a long break. Why not use this opportunity to do this kind of thing again, or an even better idea. Do a live show on our TinyChat page, have a couple moderators there to manage everything and post a video advertising it on YouTube. Kyle could just play for us through webcam, and maybe answer some questions and take requests from his fans. Quite a lot of people on YouTube always ignore this kind of thing, but there will be those who come, so the chatroom won't be hard to manage.

Just an idea. :] And I just realised I was speaking ABOUT Kyle, not to him, haha, forgive me tongue

Re: Your opinion regarding Online Piano Lessons

Just a curious question, are you actually teaching anyone through this method?

Re: Your opinion regarding Online Piano Lessons

Yeah about 10 people.  Theory lessons, arrangement lessons, composition lessons, and improvisation lessons work the best though as it is mostly discussion.  Regular piano lessons work, but I still prefer doing them in person.   However, the other said lessons work out JUST FINE on the net, and I love my students!

Ah, this is pretty awesome. I'd love to do lessons sometime, just need some moolah. Hah.

Same here. If I wasn't focusing all my conscious efforts to save money at the moment, I would probably give it a go at some point.

Re: Your opinion regarding Online Piano Lessons

Where as I have experienced you can create some basic videos about the key ideas and some finger ideas that how to use them and how effectively they should do.

Re: Your opinion regarding Online Piano Lessons

I know teaching someone to improvise can be done remotely because I have done it. However, I really doubt the necessary degree of contact, that is to say hundreds of emails, recordings, the odd video or two, perhaps Skype conversations, could be effective within a professional arrangement. Further, it requires a pupil of extraordinary determination and at least some technique and intimacy with the keyboard. I was very successful in this one instance, but I would never try it again unless the person approached me directly and I was completely satisfied I could help. Money and music have no connection for me, so I suppose this is easy for me to say, but while I know it can be done, the process is too individual to guarantee progress. Uniformly arranged lessons with a one size fits all approach to musical creation as one frequently sees on the web and off it, are too silly for words.

Re: Your opinion regarding Online Piano Lessons

Agreed, Ted.  Online lessons have been working quite well for me I would say.  However, I do not take beginners online for what should be clear reasons.   Intermediates are perfect for me, and I love my theory/composition students smile

I feel torn. I'm technically a beginner because I don't know jack about music theory, chord names, meanings of a bunch of musical terms, etc. but I can play at a relatively decent level for a copy cat. I'm annoyingly slow at reading easy sheets too...

Maybe I should stop playing Rejuvenation 20,000 times a day until my arms fall off and learn some basics for once. tongue
