Yeah, it's pretty bad. However, spam bots target websites based upon footprints and page rank more so than size and activity.

Indeed, makes sense. I think more mods is the right idea, but there has to be some anti-spam technique to vet them out as they sign up, like a CAPTCHA or something similar, otherwise the pollution will always be there it'll just get continuously and tediously cleaned up by mods.

Online
What about a captcha for every post someone makes until they hit 10 posts? This should circumvent most kinds of bot postings, assuming the captcha does its job.
Offline
It would depend upon the grade of the spammers we're dealing with, but that is indeed a viable solution.
The first step is securing the registration process. Which I would imagine is simpler than securing X number of posts for new users. We'll see what Kyle and GJ choose to go with. Anything will be an improvement at this point.

Am I the only one getting alot of emails that someone is replieying to this topic but when I look that there still aren't any new comments?

Why wouldn't it be? I personally don't see any reason to program a bot to lie about time zones. We have IPs so that's more valuable info anyway.

Ips can be spoofed by simply modifying some headers around. And it's also possible that they are scams, merely after your banking information so that they can wipe you clean. The question shouldn't be "why would they lie?" it should be "why wouldn't they lie?" When it comes to online advertisement in the context of spam, you simply don't know if it's an internet predator or not.

I think we can make a game from forum bots. Makes some comments and inside jokes. Who is with me?

Make a joke about where they (or it) are/is from, make something funny about what they posted and mix it together for an inside joke.

Typically inside jokes happen by accident or coincidence, not planned. Either way, can't say I don't like the idea of having fun joking about spammers.

The only way I see the joke thing working without clutter building up is with the Angry Birds spammers.

Here's the thing, I know what game they're playing, so to speak. The vast majority of these spammers are using softwares like Xrumer and SENukeX to get backlinks. They're doing this on a huge scale.
Why wouldn't they lie? Think of it this way: Why wouldn't I, as a moderator of this site, be more likely to ban someone from West Africa with a weird looking username than someone from a developed country with a relatively understandable username? If they were going to lie all they could, all their names would be Steve with a local IP. That just isn't the case.

Are new moderators soon going to be chosen or has that idea disintegrated?
There may be potential in assigning different moderation roles. I mean, you could have moderators with lesser capabilities, like deleting or making posts invisible until a senior moderator like the elusive Gary or the affable Danny or King Kyle come and affirm the deletion of the post, at least then the forum will look more spruce more often. Then perhaps after this period of probation, the moderators could graduate to senior roles.

Whether they realize it or not, some people would most certainly enjoy the idea of having power. Some people may also enjoy the idea of having a responsibility given to them by Kyle to which they feel they could aspire to being relied upon. It could be the latter of the two or among many other reasons.

Honestly being a mod loses its appeal after a while. At least that's from my experiences.
